If you truly want to experience the pinnacle of photography, point your camera toward the universe. Nothing compares to the challenge and reward of collecting ancient photons that have traveled for thousands or even millions of years before finally reaching your camera’s sensor. The more I explore the night sky, the more I realize we are merely temporary witnesses to something truly eternal. One day, we and the science we’ve built to explain it all will be gone, while the universe quietly carries on with the secrets we thought we had solved. As our Sun eventually transforms into a glowing planetary nebula, we will all simply become colors in the sky. Until then, collecting these ancient photons is as close as I’ll ever get to time travel.
